Most people wonder what makes a good breeder. It is never a shameful question to ask... What is a breeder? To sum it up, a breeder is someone who has taken the oath to humanely treat their animals with uttermost love and respect and further enhance the breed to produce healthy cats. 

A good breeder is someone who is :
1. The breeder has references.
2. The kittens parents are certified .
3. Parents are available to meet and greet.
4. The kittens are socialized for everyday household noises.
5. All cats and kittens are fed a high quality diet.
6. The kittens have been examined by a veterinarian. 
7. All cats and Kittens have been vaccinated.
8. A guarantee can be provided.
9. The breeder has recommendations for diet, care and overall well being of the breed.

Although there are many components, this is a good baseline to abide by.

A cat show is composed of a number of separate, concurrently running, individual shows held in the various judging rings throughout a show hall. Each ring is presided over by a different judge, who presents his or her own awards independent of the decisions of other judges. Hence, a cat which is chosen Best in Show by the judge in Ring 1, may not always be given the same award by the judge in Ring 2.

Every cat entered in the show is evaluated by each judge, and judged according to a written standard for its breed (with the exception of the Household Pet Class, for which there is no written standard). The standard is part blueprint because it describes the ideal specimen for the breed, and part constitution because it can be revised by the members of the breed council. A breed standard is precise enough to allow judges to evaluate cats accurately, and flexible enough to leave room for differences in interpretation between judges of keen eye and good intention.

Individual shows can be classified as either allbreed or specialty. In an allbreed show all cats, regardless of coat length or type, compete for various awards. In a specialty show only those cats of similar coat length (or type) compete for awards.

After a judge has examined all the cats in the allbreed competition - or all the cats of similar coat length (or type) if he or she is doing a specialty show - it is time for finals: the curtain call wherein the judge presents the top ten cats in show. The moment every cat breeder lives for is that moment of exhilaration when your cat is held aloft and proclaimed "Best Cat in Show"!

The judge is assisted in the ring by the Ring Clerk, whose responsibilities include calling the cats to the ring, recording the awards as given by the judge, and supervising the ring stewards.

The most important features of Maine coon cats are the head, body shape and texture of their coat. With a head slightly longer than wide, these cats present a gently concave profile with high cheekbones. Ears are large and wide at the base, moderately pointed, with lynx-like tufting inside. Large, round and expressive eyes are their most distinctive feature. Well-bred Maine coon cats have a well-balanced, rectangular appearance.

Many colors and patterns are allowed in the Maine coon cat breed. Even eye colors can vary from green to gold to blue, with some white Maine coons presenting two different-colored eyes. Their voices -- a distinctive chirping trill -- also set them apart from other breeds. Although they rarely “meow,” when they do, it sounds like a soft, high-pitched voice that directly contradicts their size.

Everything you need to know about Maine coon cats includes their appealing personality traits. They have a loving, sometimes clown-like nature and often funny habits. They try to be helpful to their human family by jumping into the center of activities. Maine coons love to chase objects and can be taught to catch and fetch. This skill can prove very helpful for rural homes in need of pest control. Because they are strong, hardy cats, novice breeders will find them a good choice for healthy kitten litters.

TemperamentUnlike some other people-oriented cat breeds, Maine coon cats are not overly dependent on their human family. Instead of pestering you for attention, they will remain close by for companionship. Not usually “lap cats,” they prefer to sit beside you instead of on top of you. Maine coon cats make great buddies for kids and generally socialize well with other pets.

Part of understanding everything you need to know about Maine coon cats is the fact that this relaxed and laid-back breed develops slowly until maturity between ages three and four. Aging does not eliminate their playful, kitten-like temperament and reputation as “gentle giants” of the feline world. Unlike many cat breeds, they prefer to remain low to the ground rather than jumping up to higher surfaces.

According to legend, British Captain Charles Coon sailed up and down the New England coasts in the 1800s and took some of his seafaring cats with him when he came into port. These ship cats mated with those on land with people referring to them as “Coon’s cats.”

Another legend mentions that these cats originally belonged to Marie Antoinette and were smuggled aboard boats bound for America as she was beheaded.

A true all-American cat, the Maine Coon was first shown at professional cat shows in 1878 and now ranks second in popularity only to the Persian in the 2007 Cat Fanciers Association’s breed registry. It is also recognized by The International Cat Association (TICA).

The Look of a Maine Coon The Maine Coon’s shaggy, weatherproof coat, full plume tail and ear tufts provide protection from harsh winters. The coat comes in three types – down, fawn and guard. The thick ruff around the neck and bushy tail shield serve to insulate the body and keep it warm. The square-shaped head is broad, the ears are large and the eyes are big, expressive, and wide set. The breed’s muscular body features a broad chest and big boned frame.

The female Maine Coon weighs between eight and 12 pounds while the males can weigh up to 20 pounds. Their bodies can stretch up to 40 inches in length.
